Becoming an Artisan

Trade Related Courses

Step 1 (Student/Candidate)

We focus on the lost generation (Individuals who did not complete school. People who want to improve his/her skills and even university graduates who needs practical experience can apply. Must be 16 years or older. The candidate will do a 3 week practical self-enrichment course of his/her choice. After which he/she will be known as a semi-skilled in occupation of choice.

Step 2 (Semi – Skilled Artisan of choice)

The lowest criteria that a candidate needs to have to apply is Grade 9 and a minimum of 4 years relevant working experience accordingly (NAMB in DHE) in terms of Chapter 6A.

Step 3 (Semi – Skilled Artisan with working experience)

The candidate must go to Indlela (Olifantsfontein) for recognition of prior learning (RPL). He/She will be assessed. If the assessment has been passed, the candidate will receive dates for their Trade Test. The Trade Test will be done at Indlela (Olifantsfontein).

Step 4 (Semi – Skilled Artisan with working experience and trade test date)

The candidate enrolls at EASTC for trade test preparation once he/she has received his/her trade test dates. The candidate will be booked exactly 3 weeks before the trade test dates and will then undergo a 3 week preparation course.

Step 5 (Trade Test)

Trade Test

Boilermaking, Welding, Plumbing, Electrical, Sheet Metal Work, Bricklaying, Carpentry, Rigging, Refrigerating, Painting & Decorating, Fitting, Fitting including Machining and Instrumentation with Process Control.

How does trade testing work:

Procedure to obtain a trade test certificate

There are 2 options of doing your Trade Test.

Option 1 RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) – The Old Section 28.

You need to proof that you worked in the industry as a semi-skilled employee in your relevant trade for a period of 4 (four) years. After the 4 years you must request a letter from your employer(s) that confirm that you have worked in your trade with specification of the type of work that you did. With these letters you have to apply at Indlela (Olifantsfontein) for trade test dates.

Option 2 Apprentice or Internship – The Old Section 13.

This process takes ±2.5 years. The requirement for this is that you obtain your N2 or higher qualification in you trade plus ±2.5 years practical on the job training. Your employer must give you a letter confirming that you have worked in your trade with specification of the type of work that you did. With these letters you have to apply at Indlela (Olifantsfontein) for trade test dates.

With both options you will, if you pass the Trade Test, obtain a Section 26D qualification (Red Seal Certificate).

Step 6 (Qualification)

Once the candidate passes his/her trade test at Indlela (Olifantsfontein), Department of Higher Education. He/she will receive full qualification (Red seal certificate) from the Department of Higher Education.

Step 7 (Qualified Artisan)

The candidate is now a fully qualified artisan regardless of his/her (background) and can be paid accordingly to their red seal certificate. This means the qualified artisan can start to build a better life for himself/herself and also contribute to the economy of South Africa.


Occupational Related Courses

Step 1 (Student/Candidate)
